Your Design Style, Traditional!

What is you Design Style? Today, Blog #2 in this style series is Traditional. Let's see if this is where you feel most comfortable.

Traditional style has been popular for centuries and will continue to stay in the forefront of design style for many years to come. Mostly because of it's " handed down" feel. Traditional design is elegant. formal and refined with curved lines and ornate carvings. Usually, the pieces are upholstered with mid-tones and muted fabric, simple florals, brocades, stripes or plaids. Traditional room settings are symmetrical and use classic styling.

Drapery and curtains are a big part of traditional design. They are usually a heavy drapery with large cornices or valances and include sheers behind the drapes.

In traditional wall decor, anything old goes! There are many, many pieces of artwork to choose from but you can make it your own by putting something sentimental on your walls. Take your grandmothers old pieces of let's say jewelry or your Grandpa's skeleton keys or tools, build or buy a shadow box to display them in on the wall. Also, mix in a few antique frames with, maybe, your families old wedding picture, family portrait or even your family tree. The sky is the limit!

Most of us think about our grandparents furniture when we think of Traditional. It warms our heart to remember the comfort and love that we experienced with our grandparents around the dinner table and in the comfort of their living room. That is why traditional style will always be around. There are many furniture manufacturers making beautiful traditional furnishings today. Some have been around for generations, so if you cannot afford the antique, and you did not inherit your family heirlooms, you can buy new traditional style furniture and accessories for a lot less to accomplish the same feel.

Your Design Style, Eclectic!

One of the first questions I ask a client on a phone interview is "What do you consider your design style?" Most of the time, they do not know. So we thought we would try to help you understand the differences in design styles in the coming weeks. Today we are going to begin with Eclectic.

You know your have an Eclectic design style if you love mixing and matching old and new furniture and decor and you are uncomfortable being "Matchy, Matchy". Being Eclectic invites you to fill a space with objects you love and unique finds that strike your fancy.

Most people are afraid to mix things but if it is done correctly it shows off your confidence yet still adheres to the fundamentals of good design. Plus it's so much fun to feel like you are getting away with something!!! It's like thinking purebreds are really pretty but mutts capture your heart in a way that's hard to explain.

While an eclectic room's fabrics should harmonize with each other, that doesn't mean they need to be boring. Use interesting mixes of patterns and textures which have a similar hue in common, then add details like beaded trim or fringe.

Making an Eclectic room work is best when you anchor the room with strong contrasts. That's a little misleading and could be a disaster if done wrong. The trick is to find enough common ground to make a space gel while still contrasting your pieces and colors. Choose a few must have pieces to anchor the space and then start experimenting with accent pieces. Just remember that you cannot put every piece you love in one room.

Make sure you keep the backdrop clean. What we mean by that is, keep it simple so as the pieces will not to compete with each other. Err on the side of neutral, and use unassuming hues such as a white, cream gray, taupe or a pale blue. If you think that it's not enough, try painting an accent wall with a color from one of the pieces you want to use in the room or add a colorful area rug. That should do it!

Color and pattern are extremely important. With Eclectic style you can do almost anything with color. You can pair bright hues with shy pastels, mix and match every shade of one color that you would like. You can also mix stripes and florals but it all needs to make sense in the room. If you try to bring in every single shade you love, or if you pile up patterns with no restraint, you'll be left with a mess. This bedroom is done to perfection!

The fun of eclectic style is the element of surprise. Use pieces that are personal and that you are emotionally attached too. For instance, showcase mementos from your trip to Italy that you took a few years ago in a fun way or bring out your favorite concert posters of your favorite vintage band. Be careful though, you can go overboard with too many differing pieces. Think of your quirky piece as an exclamation mark in your room and do not get too carried away.

These are just a few of the elements of Eclectic Style. This style has many positive attributes. You can build a design a little bit at a time by finding just the right pieces, and you can express your personality to its fullest. Don't be afraid to combine different loves and passions into one room. You may find that the end result is more cohesive than you could have imagined.

The Psychology of Color

One of the most interesting questions I get while working with a client is "What color would you paint this room or use on this chair?" As an Interior Designer, you really need to get to know your client, their lifestyle and feel for their space to have the right answer to that all encompassing question. It's one of the most important factors in design. What color we wear and what color our rooms are can greatly affect us. So....we thought that we would help you to understand why color is so important and what each color has to say about you and your space.

Let's begin with Cool Colors.

Blue is a cool color and conveys Dependability, Tranquility, Faithfulness, and Sensitivity. It's calming and you immediately feel very secure with blue. It's like the sky and the sea, no matter what, it will always be there. Blue decreases respiration and lowers blood pressure. Psychologically, very comforting.

Green is another cool color and it conveys Tranquility, Restfulness and Health. There is actually a bit of scientific logic applied to this – because the eye focuses the color green directly on the retina, it is said to be less straining on your eye muscles. Like nature, from forests to parks, green epitomizes life and growth. FYI: Green is also the symbol of fertility as brides in the 15th century wore green wedding gowns.

Purple is also a cool color and it conveys Royalty, Creativity, Balance, and Peacefulness. Purple utilizes both red and blue to provide a nice balance between stimulation and serenity that is supposed to encourage creativity. Light purple is said to result in a peaceful surrounding, thus relieving tension.

The Warm Colors.

Red is a warm color that conveys Power, Strength, Confidence, Love and Passion. Red is a versatile color that can symbolize everything from passionate love to violent warfare. Intense and aggressive, its influence isn’t only psychological - it’s physical too. Studies have shown that seeing the color red not only speeds up your heart rate, it makes you breathe faster too. It also stimulates your appetite. Using Red on an accent wall will show the passion in you!

Orange is another warm color and it conveys Sensuality, Intuition, and Independence. The color Orange is generally perceived as the warmest of all warm colors. Positioned between Red and Yellow on the color wheel, Orange brings a little of both traits. Orange in it's most saturated form attracts attention. FYI: Interestingly, the color orange also has a spiritual connection, it is a holy color in India and Nepal.

Yellow is also a cool color and it conveys Happiness, Imagination, Warmth, and Hunger. Like Red and Orange, Yellow will make your stomach growl. That is why you see so many restaurants using the color yellow in their dining areas and also in their marketing. Yellow reflects more light and stimulates your eye.

The Neutral Colors

White is the first of all Neutral colors. It conveys Clean, Pristine, Sterile, and Airy. On the floor, walls and furniture, white can make a room feel larger then it is and add crisp freshness to your room. An all white room will look sterile and cold so if your are a neutral color lover, you would definitely want to add other neutrals such as grey, black or brown to your room so as to make it warmer and less sterile.

Grey is another neutral color and it conveys Safe, Calm, and Understated. Grey can be a wonderful background color as it will make other colors "pop". Used well, Grey can also lend interiors to calm and understated confidence but it must be the correct tone/undertone and mixed with other neutrals in the right form. Too much of the color Grey can be depressing especially if mixed with the wrong accent colors.

Black is also a neutral color and it conveys Sophistication, Elegance, Power, and Prestige. The color black is great when you want to draw attention to fine features, furniture with good bones, and any ornamental detail. The color black absorbs light so using it against lighter colors or other neutrals will draw attention to it. Use the color black wisely, like eyeliner for the room, to create a chic sophistication.

Brown is the last neutral color and it conveys Earthiness, Warmth, Depth and Welcoming. Brown consists of such a mix of colors that there isn't a place on the color wheel for it. Natural browns such as wood, wicker, straw, stone, and earth pigments - are almost always gorgeous, but synthetic browns can occasionally come across as one-dimensional and obnoxious.

Keep in mind that certain shades or tones may result in very different meanings. Also, the context around the color, and even surrounding colors, can have an effect. Lighter colors tend to make rooms look more spacious and give it a physiological lift. While darker colors tend to make a room look smaller, heavier and with long exposure can create monotony and depression.

What Exactly does an Interior Designer do?

Many times during my career I have heard questions concerning what an Interior Designer's value is. Many people, think that because they have the "knack for decorating" that they do not need a designer to complete their home project. Only after they are in middle of their project, do they understand what our value really is. They realize that it is was more complicated then what they thought. I can't tell you how many times I have received calls from homeowners asking me for my services to "fix" what they have tried to do themselves. The job at that point is harder and more costly to fix then it would have been to call an Interior Designer during the concept phase. So we thought we just might be able to help you learn why it is important to call us first!

To begin the process, an Interior Designer will meet face to face with their client at the jobsite to determine the clients needs and wishes along with observing the space that they will be working on. At that meeting, the designer will get an idea of the client's preferences and budget. They will guide their clients through what can and cannot be done.

After collecting this information, the designer formulates a design plan and estimates costs. During this process the designer's knowledge, education and experience really come into play as they will have to figure such things as space planning, functionability of the space, color scheme, and structural viabilities while understanding the client's needs and wants. Upon completing the design plan, the designer will present it to the client and make revisions based on the client's input.

When the design concept is approved by the client, the designer begins to start specifying the materials, finishings and furnishings. This process includes flooring, textiles, wall coverings, trim, lighting, furniture and more. Depending on the complexity of the project, the designer also might need to submit drawings for approval by a construction inspector to ensure that the design meets building codes. If a project requires structural work, the designer will work with an architect and/or structural engineer for that part of the project. They also hire the contractors to do technical work, such as cabinetry, lighting, plumbing, and electrical wiring. Interior Designer's offer complete project management for their customers and they are the liaison between the contractors and their clients.

Finally, the designer develops a timeline for the project, coordinates contractor work schedules, and makes sure work is completed on time. The designer oversees the installation of the design elements, and after the project is complete, the designer, together with the client, make follow-up visits to the site to ensure that the client is completely satisfied.

Remodeled Farm House

Well, we are almost complete with our latest Farm House update and wanted to share some of the pictures of our progress! We were on an extremely tight budget to remodel 2 bathrooms and change wall colors in the living room, kitchen, hall, son's bedroom and both bathrooms. It was a challenge we were anxious to tackle! We just have the window treatments left to finish and they will be added in the next few months, when our client is ready.

In the before picture, you will notice that there was a corner shower unit and the toilet next to it. We changed the corner unit to an enclosed 4' shower with porcelain tile on the walls and floors. We moved the toilet behind the door where the standard washer and dryer were. The homeowners bought a stack able washer and dryer and the storage cabinet so that we could put it where the toilet was. We also added an ADA Toilet and had a custom vanity made with new counter-tops and sink. We took the wallpaper and bead board down, then painted the walls with SW Tatami Tan. It turned out beautifully.

In the before pictures you will notice the short bath/shower unit where our client had major water splash problems that eventually caused the sheetrock to mold and peel. We tore out the entire area and replaced it with a jetted tub while adding porcelain tile up to the ceiling so as to not have those same water problems. We tiled the floor with a complimentary porcelian tile, added a new counter top with sink to match the new jetted tub. We also added a new ADA toilet, new plumbing fixtures and painted the walls in SW Spiced Cider.

In the before pictures you will notice bead board and wall paper throughout the dinette area. We took it down, changed the wall colors in the main area and hall to SW Tower Tan. We added two accent walls, one on the staircase in SW Brandywine and one on the living room/dinette wall in SW Sierra Redwood. We also painted the patio doors in SW Brandywine and the front door(not shown) in Sierra Red. (The green vertical blinds will be changed when we do the window treatments.)

So all in all, it has been a fun project with many challenges but it really turned out warm and inviting! Our client is thrilled with the turnout and that's what makes it all worthwhile!

Getting Through the Winter Doldrums!

It's that time of year, when the winter (at least in KC) has finally set in. You have taken all of your Holiday and Christmas decorations down and inside your house emulates the winter season that we are experiencing outdoors, empty and cold. This time of year is such a downer that we need something to uplift our spirit! Something to give us a boost! So we came up with a few ways to help lift your spirits in small ways to get through this blah time of year.

Add music to your home. This may be the quickest and easiest thing to do. There is something about music that lifts your spirits and makes your heart smile! Be it, songs that remind you of specific times in your life, or new music to add to your music palette. So turn the TV off and turn up the music! Dance......you will be surprised by how much this helps with your attitude!

Add new scented candles to your home. It's amazing how what you smell makes your brain turn from blah to aha! Maybe take your normal winter scent and replace it with a spring scent. There's enough winter smell outside, bring something spring like inside!

Change your Throws and Throw Pillows. This is an easy way to refresh an entire room and your spirit. You can add a new pattern pillow to your solid ones, or you can take a color out of a pattern pillow that you have and add a different solid color or two to your grouping. You could change your whole color scheme just by changing pillows. While you are at it, add a luxurious throw too! It's not overkill to have something soft on every sofa or chair. You can get a little wild and add the newest hot thing, faux fur throws and pillows! Anything to lift your spirit and keep you warm at the same time.

Add a Vase of Flowers to your Kitchen Table. Flowers, any day, but especially on dull winter days, can lift your spirit quick. Not only are they beautiful to the eye, they smell so good! Maybe you have an anniversary or birthday coming up.....request flowers from your loved ones! If not, go to the grocery store and pick up a bunch that they already have together and just add them to your vase! The grocery florist is a cost effective way to purchase everyday flowers to brighten your mood.

And Finally.....Think Spring! Make plans for your springtime activities. Start jotting down what you would love to do when it finally does arrive. You'll be ready when it does!

Cost effective Updates for Your Kitchen in 2012

Most of us know that our kitchen is the hub of all activity in our homes. We use it not only to cook and serve food, we use it to hang out when we have family or friends over. It is the ultimate multipurpose room in our home! So....lets talk about improving it's functionality and aesthetics for 2012. No matter what your budget is, from affordable fixes to complete overhauls we have a solution for you. Today we'll talk about the cost effective updates to add interest in your kitchen.

Paint. We believe that paint is the most affordable and dramatic way to to update any room, even the kitchen. You can begin by creating an accent wall in the area. Pick a color that will make a bold statement to use on the wall behind the table or the space above the sink. Wherever you think a bold splash of color is needed. You can also achieve this with a colorful tile back splash or wallpaper.

Paint the cabinets! This requires a lot more work but has the same dramatic results!

Update your knobs and pulls. This is a relatively easy way to add a little pizazz to your kitchen. Just be sure that you measure the size of your existing pulls before you head out to the hardware store! There are many different sizes and styles available.

Add Artwork. Adding artwork will instantly personalize your space. Just because your kitchen is a functional room, doesn't mean you can't give it a little flair! If you have a large wall or only have a small shelf, live it up....add some flair!

Update your chairs/stools. From your kitchen breakfast bar to your dining table, your chairs are an important part of your kitchen. They should be comfortable as well as functional and they can be the spark your kitchen needs! By just reupholstering your stools or chairs, it will make a profound difference in your kitchen. Bring in color and pattern to create a distinct style. If you have wood chairs...paint them! You can also keep a few of the old and add a few new ones. The options are endless!

Add New Light Fixtures. Lighting is all-important in the kitchen. If your kitchen doesn't have a mix of ambient lighting and task lighting, you may want to consult a kitchen designer ie; Pezzo Bello Interiors, to help you to update your lighting. You can add recessed lights, pendant lights, under cabinet lights, or other solutions to make your kitchen more functional and bright.

Replace your sink and faucet. Take a minute to assess your relationship with your sink. You likely spend far to much time hovering over it to be unsatisfied. Undermount and flush sinks are great choices. They’re easy to clean and have a chic, seamless look. Single-bowl sinks provide enough room for washing dishes and large pots, but multi-bowl sinks provide the option of using half the sink as a drying rack or soaking area. Your faucet is not only for cleaning and rinsing your dishes, it should be able to reach every corner of your sink. Take measurements and decide on your preferences before heading to your local showroom.

How to Organize your Christmas Decor for Storage

Well, the hustle bustle is finally over and you are left with the daunting job of putting away all of your Christmas Decor to be used again for 2012. UGH! Most of us are excited to put everything up in late November or early December, but the job of taking down and storing everything for the following year is not on the top of our "fun to do" list, so here are a few tips to make the job a little easier for you this year and next!

Tip #1 Take pictures of your Christmas displays before taking them down.
This may be the most important detail of all. This will make it so much easier and less time consuming the following year when you have to reset everything in it's proper place. You can include a physical picture or disc in your cartons when you store them or you can have a folder on your computer with these pictures to refer to.

Tip#2 Sort and Purge
Don't make the mistake of just putting your pieces in any box or carton that they seem to fit into. Next year when you are taking them out, everything will be in many different boxes. So we suggest you organize them by putting them into groups for each room or area. At the same time, purge all of the items that you do not really want to use any longer. This is a great time to donate the pieces that you no longer love to a family member or a great charity. With what you do still love, use packing labels on each box with as general or specific list of contents in each box as you feel you will need to.
For instance:
     Outdoor.....would include lighting for outdoor bushes and trees, wreaths, free standing items and any other items that you only use outdoors.
     Kitchen....would include your Christmas Dishes, glasses and such. It would also include anything that you display in your kitchen area such as table decor. This may even include tree decorations if you have one in that area.
    Main Christmas Tree Decorations....everything on your main tree including lights and ornaments, garland and tree skirt.Make sure to wrap your ornaments well so that they do not break while being stored. You can use egg cartons to store small ornaments.
     Linens......any items that you use in your bedroom such as bed linens, bath linens, throws and toss pillows. Add a dryer sheet or two to keep them smelling wonderful!
     Wrapping Items.....includes paper, bows, gift bags, boxes, scissors and tape. You can include Christmas cards that have sentimental value to you, left over Christmas cards and your addresses for sending Christmas cards the following year.
     Childrens items.....could include books and Christmas movies, stuffed reindeer, snowmen etc. or anything that relates to your children and grandchildren only.

You know what you have so group them any way you see fit for your particular instance. These are just general examples of how to group the pieces.

Tip#3 Sort through your containers.
Buy new containers only after you know what you need. This is the perfect time to look at your containers and their sizes as almost every big store will have Christmas containers on sale right now. They come in variable sizes and shapes. Some are specific for certain items like wreaths, paper, ornaments and more. You can analyze what you still need and go get them! They have specific colors such as Red and Green so when they are stored, you will know which containers you will need to pull out next year. It saves a lot of time every year.

Tip#4 Number your boxes as to which ones to open first.
You will want to know which container will be needed first like the one with your advent calendar, left over Christmas cards and such. This will help you to be able to, for instance, grab the tree stand before you open the tree and ornaments, know where the Christmas cookie cut outs are before you make the cookies, etc. You may want to decorate one room before another. This may seem silly, but it will help you to save time later.

Tip#5. Survey what you are missing and replace it.
Take the time to make a list of what you are missing from your box. What either has been broken or you just need more of. If you need more ornament hangers, snow, stocking holders, boxes or the like, this is definitely the time to go searching for them. Everything will be at least half off now so stock up for next year! Be sure to put them in the appropriate boxes for storage.

And Finally.....be flexible! This will be very time consuming but while you are using precious time this year, the following years you will find that you save way more time!

Being Flexible with Christmas Family Traditions!

Despite all of the stress that the Christmas season seems to bring, the two things most Americans say they enjoy are spending time with their family on Christmas and to celebrate their family traditions. I know this to be true with our family too. We have several traditions that, frankly, are what I look most forward to during the season.

Some traditions are passed down from generation to generation but many can be started each year. Here are a few examples of our yearly traditions and the flexibility we have had to deal with.

Tradition #1. The day that you traditionally celebrate Christmas with your family may change when the children get married and have children of their own.
All of a sudden, there are in-laws to add into the equation So each family must be ready to be flexible with their celebration days. It's one of the hardest things I have had to get used to so far! For so many years, we had all our kids with us on every Holiday and at every mass. When we were growing up, I remember spending Christmas Eve with my Mom's family and going to midnight mass with my cousins. Christmas Day was with my Dad's family. It was the day we all looked forward to opening our gifts. Then, the kids got married and everything changed! I never thought of how my Mom or Dad felt when they had to change their traditions...... I thought that that's the way it would be forever! We all had to be flexible!

Tradition #2. Shopping with your kids for Christmas.
So many Americans have a tradition that has their children (especially Mom's and their girls) going shopping for their Christmas presents. I know I look forward to that every year too. But again, being flexible makes the stress a lot easier to bear. There are millions of Americans who plan the day after Thanksgiving to start their shopping. Some even begin by standing in line on Thanksgiving night, but there are many factors that go into making that happen perfectly. Weather probably being the most detrimental especially if you live in the Midwest like we do. We go to the Lake of the Ozarks to do our shopping the day after Thanksgiving, but this year, none of us could do it, so we had to be flexible....we shopped separately when we could. I have to say, it wasn't near as fun!

Tradition #3. Making Christmas Cookies.
I cannot remember a time when we did not make Italian Christmas Cookie gift boxes for our neighbors and friends. Before my children were born, I used to get together with my Aunt and cousin to make our Christmas cookies. (My mother did not make cookies) But now the tradition continues, my girls and I pick a date close to Christmas that we all can get together to make cookies. We have recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation that we use. It's a lot of hard work but we have a blast. We now have little granddaughters that have joined in on this fun time. They definitely make it impossible not to be flexible on that day. Who has to nap, or who has to attend school part of that day. We always make it work and it never ceases to amaze me that they all get done while having a great time doing it!

Tradition #4 Making our Christmas Wrapping Paper.
This is one of the traditions that all of the family is involved in. We get the left over bolts of newspaper print that the printer cannot use and y husband sets up a makeshift roller on a ladder that we roll the paper off of and onto the large table we have next to it. Each person gets to make as many large pieces of paper that they want. There's every color paint and many accessories along with gloves, paint brushes and tarps. Everyone lets their creativity flow! It is so much fun, but again, we have to be flexible as to when we do it. We have to try to set a date close enough to Christmas that everyone can make, the weather again needs to cooperate as we do it in the garage and we have to take into consideration the grandkids naps and feeding schedules! It's quite chaotic but so much fun and the paper is beautiful!!!

Tradition #5. Making Gingerbread Houses with the grandchildren.
Since my granddaughters were born, I have started a new Nonnie/Granddaughter tradition, making gingerbread houses! It is quite the feat with the girls so little but fun no less. We buy the kit, put them together and the girls put all of the candy on it. Trying to keep them from eating the candy at this age is pretty interesting. It's a lot of fun but they hardly ever stay together for very long! Being flexible and having patience are the two things needed for this tradition. We haven't gotten it done yet this year so we are going to do them on Christmas Day this year. Wow.....I hope I'm flexible enough on that day! LOL

Tangerine Tango is deeper, bolder and more red then orange but pairs nicely with many of the same colors as does orange. It's reddish orange hue creates positive energy and warmth. As designers, we are thrilled with this choice and have a few tips to incorporate this color into your home.

Tip#1

If you decide that you love this bold new color and would like to use it in an entire room, do not hesitate. It is warm, cheerful, inviting and you can tone it down a little with neutral accents of Khaki, Greys, Tans and Blacks if you are just a little apprehensive.

Tip # 4

Tangerine Tango is a great accent to the front of your home. Use it on your door to draw guests to your home when your home is a neutral color like grey, khaki or brown. It will set your home apart from the others!

Vacation Home Make Over

Not too many experiences compare to the peace of mind that overcomes you when escaping real world dramas and paying a visit to a treasured vacation home. Sanity can be achieved from simply getting out of town.

When someone chooses a vacation home it is important to choose one that is soothing and represents personality. What a lot of people overlook is the potential in older property builds. Pezzo Bello is certain that although it may seem impossible, it is absolutely achievable.

Many Missourians are familiar with the Lake of the Ozarks. Although it is only a couple hours absent from home, it is a place to let loose and enjoy time away. Pezzo Bello has spent the last couple years helping Lake Ozark property owners take rags to riches, all with a couple small sweat projects.

Below is an example of what a typical lake condominium might look like. For the most part finishes are outdated, but with an eye for the potential it is possible to achieve personality.

For this project, Pezzo Bello took all wall coverings down, repainted the walls and updated furniture, accessories and hardware. All very simple projects that helped bring the property value up and uncover individuality.

For this project there are still a couple small updates to be completed in the coming months, but all the improvements you see were completed in two seasons. Proving that taking something old and bringing back its youth is not as impossible as many expect it to be. As long as the core of the build is sturdy and hardy you can expect sweat equity to happen easily. Meaning, you can enjoy all there is to love about your vacation home in a matter of months.

My First Place…Help!

Pezzo Bello Interiors is so thrilled with our newest project and we want to share it with each of you. Mostly because it is a familiar scenario, one that almost all of us have experienced ourselves.

Our client is a young, vibrant 25 year old female who is facing one of the most exhilarating experiences in her adult life. Yes, you guessed it; she has purchased her first home. It’s a great 25 year old ranch that just needed updating. Her excitement is contagious, her attitude is positive and her expectations are inspiring.

Since this project is still in the beginning stages we are presenting the before pictures today. However, as the weeks progress, we will have final pictures to share. This is going to be a fun one to watch!

Our first objective was to update all the walls with fantastic color! Brighten it up…make it new! All of these colors were purposely chosen to fit our client’s unique personality.

The Living Room will be Sherwin Williams Proper Grey and the ceilings a bright white. In the Kitchen, all of the wallpaper below the chair rail will be removed and replaced with the same Proper Grey that is in the living room. All walls above the chair rail in the kitchen will be in the coordinating lighter shade, Essential Grey.

The owner was concerned about the age and style of the kitchen cabinets but we reassured her that they were perfect! We fell in love with them the moment we saw them. Just a little clean up and new cabinet pulls and they will be a great focal point in her kitchen. The back splash will be updated and changed from the brick red tile to a metallic of copper, bronze or silver.

The bathroom of course is our designer Antionette’s favorite because it is going to be painted the rich purple shade of Sherwin Williams’ Clematis. The bathtub/shower, and toilet have been replaced with white fixtures. The countertop will be white marble, and just this week new ceramic tile was installed on the bathroom floor.

The master bedroom will be Sherwin Williams’ sassy shade of blue called Blue Cruise, a color that complements our homeowner the best.

The spare bedroom will be a beautiful shade of green called Rockwood Jade by Sherwin Williams.

The next phase will be window treatments throughout the home. Check in often to see the total transformation!

While other times we choose bits and pieces because they represent our personality. Whether it be our clothing, our cars or even our favorite sofa we form a connection with all of our purchases. Sometimes those connections die off and we move on, while others hold a special place in our hearts. So we ask you again…what would you choose?

Pezzo Bello Interiors Gains Another 4 lbs

April 20, 2010 was a day that offered great anxiety as well as precious beginnings for the Pezzo Bello Interiors family. Our graphic artist/daughter/sister Alexis Bennett went into early labor while traveling at the Lake of the Ozarks. She was two months early, with a scheduled delivery for June 27th.

Jackson Tighe Bennett is the first baby boy grandson/nephew for the Pezzo Bello family. He is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Weighing in at just 4lbs, he is quite the tiger. We are so thrilled!!

The Bennett bunch is so grateful for the positive outcome, as there could have been so many complications. No doubt, the power of prayer is amongst this miracle.

What inspires you most about spring and summer?

All the beautiful colors!! I am so energized about the pastels this season. Soft silvers pale pinks, light browns and vibrant turquoise. Fabulous!!

What is your signature color?

My signature color is without doubt red. Red is rich, seductive and confident all at once. It is a color that makes an entrance and speaks without words.

When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

My mother turned me on to design when I was younger. Then in high school a work colleague told me she was studying Interior Design at Park University and she told me all about the program. I was immediately intrigued, and it all worked out from there.

What techniques do you use to uncover your clients individuality?

First, I like to walk the clients home to get a good idea of their taste. After a brief tour the client and I sit down and begin answering the Pezzo Bello Interiors questionnaire. After the client has answered the questions, I have a better understanding for their needs and wants. These questions are a great starting point. However, it is the conversations that follow this questionnaire that uncover the clients individuality. Usually, there is an a’ha moment in which the client gets energized, and this is when I know we have discovered their individuality.

If you could only pick one word to describe your design style, what would it be?

Urban

Where is your favorite place to brainstorm ideas and concepts?

I enjoy brainstorming in a quiet room of my own, filled with photographs, textiles and drawings. Concentration is major for me.

If you could design any one famous persons home, who would it be and why?

Bette Midler, mostly because of her eccentric personality. I can only imagine how dramatically entertaining the entire design process would be. I enjoy customers that keep me on my toes, and want to experience it all!!

What inspires you most about spring & summer?

In my opinion spring and summer are more of a sensation than a season. It's a new beginning after a long cold winter in Kansas City. Every year all of the smells of spring are brand new... the grass, the flowers and the blooming trees. It inspires me and gives me energy that I thought had been lost throughout the winter months! Anyone who knows me knows I have my spring flowers present in my home right after Valentines Day. It's definitely inspirational!

What is your signature color?

Well, this is a tough one, but I would have to say purple. It has always been my personal favorite color. I'm not sure it's my signature color though as very few people ask for purple in their homes. People who love purple are highly individual, fastidious, witty and sensitive, with a strong desire to be unique and different. Purple is expansive and artistic. If you chose Purple, you tend to be unconventional, tolerant and dignified. Anytime a customer does want purple, it ends up being one of my favorite designs and they really love it too.

When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

I knew I wanted to be a designer when I was very young. I didn't know what a designer was at that age, but looking back, I know now, it was always my destiny. My childhood home was a very warm and welcoming one but I always thought of ways to make it better. If you just moved this wall or changed that color...it would be much better and more functional. While watching TV (in black and white for most of my young childhood) I would pay more attention to the surroundings and accessories then to the actual storyline. I always knew that color would make it so much better.... and finally it did! I still look at the surroundings on TV to this day.

What techniques do you use to uncover your clients individuality?

I came up with a lifestyle questionnaire that I ask my clients to answer on or before our first meeting. It gives me some insight to what they are looking for in their new design. Our initial meeting at their home, while viewing their surroundings and chatting about their lives will naturally bring out their individuality. I always look so forward to meeting new clients and learning about them. People are incredible!

If you could only pick one word to describe your design style, what would it be?

Warm and Welcoming. That's two words isn't it? Then maybe Inviting is a better choice.

Where is your favorite place to brainstorm ides and concepts?

There is no certain place that I could actually say "I need to go there to come up with something that will work for this client". My ideas come to me during my normal daily routine, which in large part is in my studio. I do have to say, I am inspired by texture and textiles. That is my normal starting point on any design job. Where there is texture and textiles, I find the inspiration to work out my ideas.

If you could design any one famous persons home, who would it be and why?

I'm not big on celebrity. I would much rather design an average person’s home so that they feel like a celebrity! To me, just being a celebrity does not make you successful, but feeling like one, well that's another story. I think that your environment is the key to your success in every aspect of your life. It doesn't mean you have to spend a lot of money to redo your home, just changing a few things like paint, toss pillows or a picture can brighten up an area for a nominal cost.

While at the Vegas Market shopping for our clients we came across a substantial environmental story.

Urban Woods is one of the most environmentally cautious companies we have encountered over the years of market shopping. Their company is unique because all their products are created using local vintage reclaimed wood. All their furniture is manufactured in Los Angeles, CA and the wood is approximately 50-100 years old harvested locally. The greatest part about reclaimed wood is that there is a certain beauty behind the deep grains and rustic imperfections. To add even more importance to their products the use of a water solvent non-toxic stain is applied to all their furniture. No joke, you could literally drink their stain. How many companies do you know like that…

Their product offering is just as spectacular as their story. Handcrafted in the USA and completely customizable the design process offers endless opportunities. Of course, being the positive designers that we are, we decided to design furniture through Urban Woods for a young couple we were working with. The couple was in the market for a large kitchen table with an urban contemporary classic design. It needed to be large enough to seat at least 10 people, and quality was of the utmost importance. We were able to fulfill all the requirements and then some! Santina even got a chair named after her. Urban Woods will be promoting this new chair in the coming months. Very exciting!

One Thing Leads to Another

You never know how one thing might lead to another. For us it was about relationships. Several years ago, while visiting High Point North Carolina for a trade show, we happened upon a new contemporary leather furniture vendor. It was love at first sight.
